3 Tips for Drone Photos

Choose the right hour of the day

Master the Timing of the Waves and Surfers

Timing is everything in surf photography, especially from above. Aim to shoot at times when the waves are well-defined, often just as they’re breaking or cresting. Capture surfers at the peak of their moves—whether they're dropping into a wave, making a sharp turn, or catching air—to bring out the power and energy of the scene. Observing wave patterns and understanding surfer rhythms will help you anticipate and capture those peak-action moments.

Use the Right Lighting for Depth and Contrast

Ideal lighting is often found during the "golden hour," around sunrise or sunset, which gives the water a warmer, softer glow, enhancing the natural colors and textures of the waves. Midday can work too, especially when the sun is high and the water is clear, as this creates strong contrasts and highlights the movement within the waves. Avoid cloudy or overcast days if possible, as they can flatten the depth and texture of the water.

Experiment with Angles and Perspectives

Vary your altitude and angles to create different effects. Flying lower allows you to capture close-up action shots with intense detail, while higher angles give you a broader perspective of the wave’s movement and the surrounding ocean scenery. Experiment with slightly tilted angles or capturing waves diagonally, which can add energy and dynamism to the composition.
